Homemade Falafels Bites

Ingredients

  • 225 g  dried chick peas, soaked overnight

  • 1 cup parsley leaves, roughly chopped

  • 1 cup coriander leaves , roughly chopped

  • 6 shallots 

  • 2 cloves of garlic , crushed

  • 1tsp sesame seeds

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1/2 tsp coriander

  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder 

  • 4 tsp flour (plain/all purpose) OR chickpea flour

  • 5 tbsp water

  • Vegetable of Rice Bran oil, for frying

Method:

Soak Chickpeas:

  • Place chickpeas in a large bowl.

  • Cover with plenty of cold water.

  • Soak for 12 hours or up to 2 days.

  1. Prepare Mixture:

    • Drain chickpeas and place them in a food processor.

    • Add all remaining falafel ingredients.

    • Blitz on high for 2-3 minutes, scraping down sides as needed.

    • The mixture should resemble smooth guacamole.

  2. Shape Falafel:

    • Scoop heaped tablespoons of the mixture.

    • Shape into balls, domes, or discs.

    • Place on a tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  3. Cook Falafel:

    • Pour oil into a shallow saucepan and heat until small bubbles appear.

    • Slide falafels into the oil in batches.

    • Cook for about 4 minutes, using two metal spoons to roll, until deep golden and crusty.

    • Drain on paper towels.

  4. Serve:

    • Serve fresh with wraps, tabbouleh, dips, and salad.Hope you enjoy!

Top Tips

1. Dried chickpeas cannot be substituted with canned, it just won't work!

2. Shallots (green onions / scallions) - use only the white and light green part (oniony flavour), not the dark green part. You need about 3/4 cup

3. Baking powder - not all recipes use this. This will help , falafels will be fluffier and more moist inside, without baking powder it's more dense and a bit dough-like.
